The Students First Award, which since 1993 has been presented annually to faculty, staff and administrators who have shown extraordinary service and commitment to the student body of William Paterson University, has been renamed in honor of President Arnold Speert.

President Speert was presented with the first Dr. Arnold Speert Students First Award on April 29 during the annual Student Government Awards dinner. In addition to President Speert, the award was presented to Karen Hilberg, associate director of recreational services; Michael Principe, professor of political science; and Fr. Lou Scurti, director of Catholic Campus Ministry.

“President Speert has always been extremely supportive of the student body, and the Student Government specifically. Many of the student leaders I've worked with over the years have had so much respect for him,” says Jess Pepe, president of the Student Government Association. “We still wish there was more we could do to honor him and his dedication to this university. He is the ultimate example of putting students first, so it was only appropriate to rename the Students First Award after him.”
