A semester-long campus initiative to garner support for the victims of the Darfur region of Africa has successfully raised almost $5,000 for the Save Darfur Coalition. The WPU Save Darfur Committee sponsored a series of events, including Spring into Action Week ’07, which sought not only to raise money, but to increase awareness of the dire situation in the war-torn country.

“May the first genocide of the 21st century also be the last,” says Gina Guerrieri, assistant professor, communication, who served as chairperson of the steering committee. “In addition to the money raised, our letters, with more than 500 signatures, have been mailed to President Bush, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon,” and other government representatives.

Photo of Portiz and Adubato

The 27th season of the University’s Distinguished Lecturer Series came to a close on May 4, 2007 as Steve Adubato, a renowned television broadcaster and the host of One on One with Steve Adubato, interviewed Deborah T. Poritz, retired chief justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, during an event that had been rescheduled from March 16 due to inclement weather. The event was taped for future airing on public television and cable outlets.

During the taping, Adubato asked questions about several famous cases over which Poritz presided including Boy Scouts of America et al vs. James Dale, which dealt with whether the Boy Scouts could expel a gay troop leader. “The sad truth is that excluded groups and individuals have been prevented from full participation in the social, economic and political life of our country,” Poritz said.  “The human price of this bigotry has been enormous. At a most fundamental level, adherence to a principle of equality demands that our legal system protect the victim of invidious discrimination."divider line
