Students From Across the Country Participate in Sales Challenge Competition from November 6 to 8

As a result of a new partnership agreement recently signed with Windesheim University in The Netherlands, students and faculty from the University’s Department of Special Education and Counseling will have the opportunity to participate in an international program that will encourage the exchange of new ideas and philosophies regarding special education programs.

Global Entrepreneur Presents First Shier Entrepreneurship Lecture


Ganesh Natarajan, Ph.D., a global entrepreneur and CEO of Zensar Technologies, Ltd., a business process company in India, provided a global perspective on the connections between technology, entrepreneurship, and education during a lecture in the 1600 Valley Road Auditorium on October 6. The lecture was the first in a series to be offered in connection with the University’s new Shier Entrepreneurship Program.

Upcoming Music Events

William Paterson University music students and faculty who traveled to China earlier this month will present a special Midday Artists Series concert that will include music performed during their trip. The concert will be held on Thursday, October 30 at 12:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the John Victor Machuga Student Center on campus.

Mavis Staples, gospel and soul legend, will give a rare concert performance on Saturday, November 8 at 8:00 p.m. in Shea Center.

The New Music Series begins its 31st season on Monday, November 10 with a concert featuring guest artists Julia Bruskin, cello, Gary Buttery, tuba, and Dominic Donato, percussion, in performance with William Paterson music faculty and students. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Shea Center.

William Paterson to Hold Lesson Study Work Sessions November 20 to 21

Work sessions for educators interested in learning about the discipline of lesson study, a professional learning process for teachers to examine and improve their instructional methods and enhance the quality of education in the classroom, will be held at William Paterson on November 20 and 21, 2008.

Frank Deford, Mike Lupica and Selena Roberts to Present “The Art of Sportswriting” at Distinguished Lecturer Series on November 21

Master sportswriters Frank Deford, Mike Lupica, and Selena Roberts will join together on November 21, 2008 for “The Art of Sportswriting,” an entertaining behind-the-headlines conversation about their experiences and insights to be held as part of William Paterson University’s Distinguished Lecturer Series.

University Celebrates Homecoming

The Alumni Association coordinated the day’s events. Alumni and their families came to William Paterson on Saturday, October 11 for a fun-filled day of fall events hosted by the University’s Alumni Association. Events included a carnival, a barbeque, and a tour of the new University Commons building on its first anniversary. The day was capped by the traditional homecoming football game, this year against Morrisville State. The Pioneers, under first-year head coach Jerry Flora, defeated Morrisville State 27-14 before 2,000 fans at Wightman Stadium.

Inaugural event of The Gandhian Forum for Peace and Justice

Members of the University administration and faculty and two guest speakers came together for the inaugural event of The Gandhian Forum for Peace and Justice at the University. The forum, which seeks to apply Mahatma Gandhi’s beliefs of respect and tolerance to world events, was funded by a gift from Eswar Phadia, a longtime faculty member and the former dean of the College of Science and Health. Present at the October 2 lecture were (from left) Balmuri Natrajan, assistant professor, anthropology, who is the director of the forum; Edward Weil, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs; Madelyn Hoffman, director, New Jersey Peace Action, who spoke at the event; Aftab Seth, Keio University, Japan, and India’s former ambassador to Japan, Vietnam, and Greece, who also spoke; Arnold Speert, University president; Phadia; and Maya Chadda, professor, political science.

Leading American Scholar to Lecture on Imperiled Fish During Program on November 13

H. Bruce Franklin, one of the country’s leading cultural scholars, will discuss his latest book, The Most Important Fish in the Sea: Menhaden and America, during a lecture on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. in the Cheng Library Auditorium at William Paterson University in Wayne. Admission is free. The program is supported by a grant from the William Paterson University Alumni Association.

The 11th-ranked William Paterson men's soccer team (12-4-2, 5-3-1 NJAC) has secured the fourth seed for the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament, and will host fifth-seeded The College of New Jersey in the first round Saturday, Nov. 1, at 6:00 p.m. at Pioneer Soccer Park.
