Five William Paterson athletic training majors served as medical volunteers at the 2009 Boston Marathon in April. Seniors Nicole Callaghan, Monique Gerald and Marc Voicechovski and juniors Giana Albruzzese and Brittany Howell, accompanied by instructor Jaclyn Norberg, ATC, joined with thousands of other volunteers at the annual event. Norberg worked in the medical tent next to the finish line, while the students were assigned to the “medical wheelchair sweep team,”assisting runners who they felt needed help at the end of the race. “The students were able to see first hand how finishing 26.2 miles can take a toll on the runners’ bodies, and how walking the 20 feet to the medical tent can be almost impossible after running such a long distance,” says Norberg.

Jessica Cornelius, a junior majoring in English, has been accepted to participate in the Summer Institute for Literary and Cultural Studies at Wheaton College in Massachusetts from June 1 to 28. She is one of 12 students selected for the highly competitive program, which is designed to increase diversity in the field of English studies by preparing students to apply to doctoral programs in English. The program supplements the undergraduate curriculum, introduces students to archival research, and works on writing and presentation skills. Cornelius was sponsored for the program by Martha Witt, assistant professor of English. The program is supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Payton MacDonald, music, performed as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall on May 12. The program, conducted by John Adams, was part of the orchestra’s Green Umbrella Series, which provides audiences with the opportunity to hear virtuoso performances from 20th century and living composers. MacDonald joined the orchestra as percussion soloist for his own composition, Cowboy Tabla/Cowboy Raga. In a review of the concert, the Los Angeles Times called MacDonald an “inventive, stylistically omnivorous composer and gifted performer…”
