Students and the general manager of the University’s radio station WPSC 88.7 FM traveled to New York last week to present the second annual Bravery in Radio award to radio icon Cousin Brucie (Bruce Morrow). The award was presented live on Morrow’s Sirius XM radio show, which was broadcast to a national audience.

Morrow was honored for his many years of creative, inspirational programming and for his lifelong commitment to the medium of radio, according to Rob Quicke, assistant professor of communication and general manager of the station. “Your career in radio and your commitment to the medium and your inspirational programming have inspired legions of broadcasters and we felt it was courageous and deserved recognition,” Quicke told Morrow in presenting the award.

His career has spanned five decades, beginning at New York top 40 station WINS in 1959. He later moved to powerhouse WABC just as rock and roll was exploding. He quickly became a legend on the station’s evening time slot. Morrow served at WABC for 13 years until August 1974, when he jumped to rival station WNBC; after three years there, he left the airwaves to become co-owner of the Sillerman Morrow group of stations. In 1982 Morrow returned to the DJ role with New York's WCBS-FM, a popular oldies station, and hosted shows on the station until its change to an adult hits format in 2005. Shortly thereafter, he joined Sirius, where he hosts “Saturday Night Party—Live” and “Cruisin’ with Cousin Brucie.”

On April 23, WPSC 88.7 FM hosted its second annual “Braveathon” fund-raising event. WPSC 88.7 FM and WPTV-6 teamed up to simulcast a program featuring fifteen bands performing over fifteen hours live from Hobart Hall’s TV studios A and B. The event, which ran from 9:00 a.m. to midnight, raised $1,100 for WPSC. The station also streams from the website wpradio887.org.
