GUITARFEST 2001 SLATED FOR WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY

Performances and master classes will mark the sixth Guitarfest at William Paterson University in Wayne on Saturday, April 28 from 12 to 8:30 p.m. in the Askew Library Auditorium on campus.

Gabriel Handy, William Paterson guitar professor, will direct the festival that will feature a master class by guitarist and composer David Leisner. Leisner, who was deemed "absolutely splendid" by the New York Times, has recorded Bach and Villa-Lobos. His upcoming recording of Contemporary and Romantic music is produced on the Azica label.

The program is open to all guitar enthusiasts, from high school students to adults. Festivities will begin at noon with a concert by Staten Island's Curtis High School Guitar Ensemble. Under the direction of Lou Mannarino, the ensemble has released several compact discs and performed at Alice Tulley Hall in New York City. The master class is an open class with Leisner teaching selected guitar students. It will be held at 2 p.m. A faculty recital is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will feature Seth Himmelhoch, director of guitar studies at William Paterson, and Handy. They will be joined by guest artist Tamara Gura, mezzo-soprano. The activities will conclude with a William Paterson student recital at 7:30 p.m.

Full admission to the Paterson Guitarfest 2001 is $8 and registration is available at the door or through the William Paterson University Music Department in the Shea Center for Performing Arts, 300 Pompton Road in Wayne, 973-720-3215.
