BATON RISES ON WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY ORCHESTRA'S SEASON FINALE

Two distinct elements measure The Orchestra at William Paterson University season closer on Saturday, April 21. In an 8 p.m. concert at the Shea Center for the Performing Arts on campus in Wayne, the William Paterson Festival Choir sings the Mozart "Requiem" and the Mae and Fletcher Fish Young Artist Competition 2001 winners will perform.

The William Paterson Festival Choir is comprised of students, community vocalists and members of the Pro Arte Chorale of New Jersey. The combined orchestra and chorus presentation of the "Requiem" will be conducted by David Croan, Pro Arte Chorale conductor. Soloists include Pamela South, Montclair-based soprano, mezzo soprano Gabrielle Prata of New York City, and Stephen Bryant, director of choral activities at William Paterson and a resident of Upper Montclair.

Three young musicians have been selected to perform as finalists of the Mae and Fletcher Fish Young Artists Competition 2001. The competition is open to high school-aged musicians who will be in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 and reflects the Orchestra's commitment to promoting youth education and participation in the arts. The young artists are Ju-Hyun Kim, 16-year-old violinist from River Edge, Marissa Licata, 16-year-old violinist from Summit and Arielle Hansen, 16-year-old flutist from Mendham.

The Orchestra, formerly known as the Wayne Chamber Orchestra, is supported in part by grants from the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council through a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State. In addition, the orchestra is underwritten in part by William Paterson University and supported by gifts from private individuals, area businesses and corporations. The ensemble has gained national recognition both for its excellence of performance and imaginative programming
