- Young Artists Competition Finalists Perform

The Orchestra at William Paterson University will present George Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning composition "Lilacs," a work for voice and orchestra, at the orchestra’s season finale on Saturday, April 20 at 8 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the University campus in Wayne. "Lilacs," while performed by orchestras across the United States, will receive its New Jersey premiere at this concert with soprano Faye Robinson as guest soloist. Robinson, an internationally known vocalist, premiered the work with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and subsequently recorded the work with the Arizona State University Orchestra on the Summit label.

Four young musicians have been selected to perform as finalists of the Mae and Fletcher Fish Young Artists Competition. The competition is open to high school-aged musicians in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 and reflects the Orchestra’s commitment to promoting youth education and participation in the arts. The young artists are Jessica Wang, a cellist from Bedminster, Yoo-bin Son, a flutist from Ridgefield, Sung-woo Kim, a flutist from Tenafly, and Katie Owen, a flutist from Lebanon. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize, a four-year music scholarship to William Paterson University, a performance with the Orchestra and a performance on the Hobart Manor Recital Series the following season.

The Orchestra at William Paterson University, is supported in part by grants from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council through a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State. In addition, the orchestra is underwritten in part by William Paterson University and supported by gifts from private individuals, area businesses and corporations. The ensemble has gained national recognition both for its excellence of performance and imaginative programming.
