WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOST THIRD ANNUAL LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER, INTERSEX AND ALLY LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

The Third Annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Ally Leadership Conference will be held at William Paterson University in Wayne on Friday, October 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Machuga Student Center Ballroom. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the University’s Women’s Center, Office of Employment Equity and Diversity, Campus Activities and Student Leadership, Women’s Studies Department and John Victor Machuga Foundation.

Louise Sullivan-Blum, author and associate professor of English and creative writing at Mansfield University in Pennsylvania, will deliver the keynote address at the conference, which is titled "Embracing Diversity, Creating Change."

Blum, who will speak from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m., made history by teaching the first gay and lesbian literature class at Mansfield University. Her latest work, "You’re Not From Around Here, Are You? A Lesbian in Small-Town America," is a memoir of her insemination and pregnancy. A question and answer session will follow from 3:30 to 4 p.m.

The conference features two workshop blocks, which will enable faculty, staff and students to express their feelings regarding such issues as bisexuality, homophobia and the trials and tribulations of coming out.

Morning workshops, to be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m., include a presentation by Arlene Scala, chair of the women’s studies department at William Paterson University, who will speak about "Coming Out on Campus." Other morning workshops from 11:40 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. will include the session "Creating Change: A Roundtable Discussion." The conference concludes with a reception from 4 to 5 p.m. for the exhibit "Artist in Transition," featuring paintings by Julien Alleyne.
