CHARLI PERSIP AND HIS BIG BAND ARE SET TO PERFORM AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY’S JAZZ ROOM SERIES ON OCTOBER 23

Charli Persip, one of the definitive modern jazz drummers, and his big band Supersound, will take center stage at William Paterson University in Wayne on Sunday, October 23 as part of the fall 2005 Jazz Room Series.

The concert will begin at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne. Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $15 standard and $12 for senior citizens.

Prior to the concert, Persip and his group will be the guests for “Sittin In,” an informal discussion about jazz, at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center. Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.

A graduate of Dizzy Gillespie’s big bands, Persip has recorded with Lee Morgan, Dinah Washington, Red Garland, Gil Evans, Don Ellis and countless others. His big band, Supersound, represents the total spectrum of jazz, from the bebop era to the present. The band's repertoire consists of unique arrangements of both standards and original compositions by some of today's most outstanding writers. Their latest recording, No Dummies Allowed, on the Soul Note label, underscores Supersound’s reputation as a true jazz orchestra. In addition to his impressive discography, Persip is also the author of the booHow Not To Play Drums.

Now in its 28th year of exciting performances, The Jazz Room is one of the largest and most prestigious college-sponsored jazz events in the country. Performers include renowned professionals who encompass the complete spectrum of jazz, from practitioners of traditional jazz to avant-garde to bebop to swing to Afro-Latin jazz as well as William Paterson’s own student ensembles. The series has won numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for its innovative programming.

Funding for The Jazz Room at William Paterson University has been made possible, in part, by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.  For more information, call the Shea Center for Performing Arts Box Office at 973-720-2371.
