DAN RATHER, WORLD-RENOWNED BROADCAST JOURNALIST, OPENS WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY’S DISTINGUISHED LECTURER SERIES ON OCTOBER 14, 2005

—Jazz artist Wynton Marsalis will present a DLS lecture on Sunday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. to coincide with a same-day performance of the Wynton Marsalis Sextet at 3 p.m. as part of the Jazz Room Series.

Dan Rather, former CBS News anchor and current “60 Minutes” correspondent, and Wynton Marsalis, one of the world’s most recognized jazz artists, are among the speakers in William Paterson University’s 2005-2006 Distinguished Lecturer Series beginning in October on the campus in Wayne.

Rather opens the 26th season of the series on October 14 with a lecture titled “Reporting the Story No Matter the Consequence.”  Eric Anderson, president and CEO of Space Adventures, the company that pioneered space tourism, and Norman Thagard, a NASA astronaut, are joined by a private citizen scheduled for space travel to discuss space flight and tourism on November 18.  Wynton Marsalis will present a lecture, “Letting Jazz Lift Your Soul,” with musical illustrations on Sunday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Shea Center.  The Wynton Marsalis Sextet will perform at 3 p.m. as part of The Jazz Room Series (tickets sold separately through the box office). Richard Gephardt, former Democratic majority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, concludes the season with a lecture on April 21.

Subscriptions for the series are $115 for the general public and $35 for William Paterson students. A limited number of single tickets may be available at the Shea Center Box Office for the first lecture as of October 10, and for all remaining lectures on October 17. For ticket availability, and to purchase single tickets, please call the box office at 973-720-2371 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.; prices are $32 standard; $30 for senior citizens and William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni; $10 for William Paterson students; and $14 for students from other schools. All lectures, except for the Marsalis lecture, begin at 8 p.m. in Shea Center on campus; parking is free.

Dan Rather has been a world-renowned broadcast journalist for more than 40 years. From the Kennedy assassination to the Indian Ocean tsunami, he has covered every major story of our time. His pursuit of a story has taken him to datelines as far ranging as Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, China, Russia, and Cuba. Domestically, Rather has covered every presidential campaign since 1960. He was the CBS News White House correspondent during the administrations of Presidents Johnson and Nixon, and was a leading force in broadcast news investigation of the Watergate scandal. On September 11, 2001, he stayed on the air for 18 hours to bring news of the deadly attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. He has earned several Emmys, a Peabody and Sigma Delta Chi awards, as well as almost every other honor in broadcast journalism.

Anderson and Thagard’s lecture is titled “Space: The Private Citizen’s new Extreme Adventure.”

Anderson is the leading entrepreneur for the commercial space flight, tourism, and transportation industry. Graduating with a degree in aerospace engineering in 1996 from the University of Virginia, he co-founded Space Adventures in 1997 with several former astronauts and leading visionaries from the aerospace, adventure, travel, and entertainment industries. He has sold more than $80 million in flights, including the only three private, space tourists and explorers to have flown into space to date.

Thagard, a NASA astronaut from 1978 to 1996, has logged more than 140 days in space.  He participated in four American shuttle missions and one mission aboard the Russian Mir Space Station. In 1966, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve where he flew 163 combat missions in Vietnam and earned 15 medals. A physician, Thagard is a professor and an associate dean at Florida State University.

Marsalis, 35, has a remarkable track record as a jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. He serves as artistic director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center program, and is renowned as a jazz statesman—a role officially recognized in 2001 when United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan proclaimed him an international ambassador of goodwill and appointed him a “United Nations messenger of peace.” Marsalis has won nine Grammy Awards and is the first jazz musician ever to be honored with the Pulitzer Prize in music. He has produced 33 jazz and 11 classical records and has sold more than seven million records worldwide, including three certified gold records.  Marsalis continues to make education a priority and regularly conducts master classes in schools.

Richard Gephardt was the first Democratic candidate to enter the 1988 presidential race, but failed to garner the nomination. In 1989, however, Gephardt was elected by his colleagues to serve as their majority leader until the Republicans took control of Congress in 1995, whereupon he was elected to serve as House minority leader. Among his accomplishments were reducing the deficit, investing in education, and cutting taxes for working families. In 2003, he again pursued his party's presidential nomination but withdrew from the race early in 2004. In 2004, he retired from the House after 28 years.
