Panel to Present Information on Writing About Local History

The history of William Paterson University, the city of Paterson, and The Bronx will be discussed at William Paterson University in Wayne on May 1 at 2 p.m. in the David and Lorraine Cheng Library. Admission is free.

The panelists, who will discuss their experiences in researching community history, are Evelyn Gonzalez, associate professor of history at William Paterson University, and author of “The Bronx,” a wide-ranging book that details the history of one of New York City’s five boroughs; and Vincent Parrillo, a professor of sociology at William Paterson, and the author of a book called “William Paterson University,” a pictorial history of the institution published this year in commemoration of the University’s 150th anniversary. Joining them is Edward Smyk, Passaic County historian, who is the author of “The Plaza of Memories: Eastside Park, Paterson, New Jersey,” and “Passaic County: An Illustrated History.”

This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library, which consists of a diverse group of library supporters who first came together in 1998. This group advocates the Library’s importance as an integral resource of the University and broader community. They provide fellowships to help focus community support on special projects and raise funds to purchase books, equipment and other materials beyond the Library’s budget. The group also encourages gifts of materials for the Library’s collections and programs.

For additional information, please call the David and Lorraine Cheng, 973-720-2113.
