The High Mountain Symphony Presents its Season Finale on April 30

The High Mountain Symphony at William Paterson University will present “The Sound of Pictures,” a program that includes Ravel’s arrangement of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” The 2005 Mae and Fletcher Fish Young Artist Competition finalists will also perform on Saturday, April 30 at 8 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne.

Three young musicians have been selected to perform as finalists in the 2005 Mae and Fletcher Fish Young Artists Competition. Dae Hee-Ahn, a violinist from Rutherford, will perform Concerto for Violin in C Major by Joseph Haydn. Timothy Orr, a violinist from South Orange will present Concerto for Viola and Orchestra by William Walton. Symphony Espagnole, composed by Edouard Lalo, will be performed by Benjamin Bregman, a violinist from Short Hills. The competition is open to high school-aged musicians who will be in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 and reflects the Symphony’s commitment to promoting youth education and participation in the arts.

This professional orchestra is underwritten, in part, by William Paterson University and the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council at Passaic County Community College through the State County Block Grant Program of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tickets are $30 standard, $27 for senior citizens and members of the William Paterson community, $8 for William Paterson students (limit two per ID) and youth 17 and under. For additional information on the concert, please call the Shea Center for Performing Arts Box Office at 973.720.2371.

Finalists in the 2004 Mae and Fletcher Fish Young Artists Competition

Dae Hee-Ahn (Rutherford, New Jersey)

Dae Hee-Ahn, born in Yeosu, South Korea, began her violin studies at the age of five. After she arrived in the United States in 1998, she entered the Preparatory Division of the Manhattan School of Music and studied there for three years under a scholarship. She is currently attending the Pre-College Division of The Julliard School. Hee-Ahn has won numerous prizes in competitions including the Queens Music Competition in 1999 and the Stecher and Horowitz Scholarship Foundation Award in 2002. She has appeared as a soloist with the Academic Symphony Orchestra and performed in recitals at Weill Recital Hall, Steinway Hall and other venues.

Timothy Orr (South Orange, New Jersey)

Timothy Orr, 17, a senior at Newark Academy in Livingston, plays the violin and has been studying music since he was eight years old. Orr also attends the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College Division, where he studies with violinist Alejandro Mendoza. Orr has performed at the Amati Music Festival and the Summit Music Festival. He was also chosen as a music scholar at the New Jersey Governor’s School for the Arts 2004 and participates in master classes with violinists Margaret Pardee and Michelle LaCourse.

Benjamin Bregman (Short Hills, New Jersey)

Bregman, a violinist, originally studied at the JCC Thurnhauer School of Music in Tenafly. He has been playing the violin for eight years and now performs with the Manhattan School of Music’s Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by James Sadewhite. Bregman placed first in the Interlochen Summer Program Competition and the New Jersey Goldblatt Competition. He also plays in his high school’s orchestra and is an active participant in the school’s Model United Nations and Debate program.
