William Paterson University Observes Latino Heritage Month During October

Dramatic performances, lectures, film and dance are part of William Paterson University’s celebration of Latino Heritage Month to be held this month on campus.

As part of the observance, two plays are scheduled, with proceeds from the events to be donated to the Hurricane Relief Fund through the Red Cross.

The first production, a romantic comedy, “Platanos and Collard Greens,” a play by David Lamb, is scheduled for October 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus. It centers on Freeman, an African American man, and Angelita, a Latino woman, and their struggles to confront and overcome cultural and racial prejudices held by family and friends as they pursue a relationship. Admission is free for the William Paterson community, and $3 for the public. All proceeds benefit the Hurricane Relief Fund.

“Soul Latina,” a comedy show by Linda Nieves Powell and other Latina writers and performers, is scheduled for a performance at William Paterson University on October 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Shea Center. The show consists of monologues and sketches which explore the experience of being a woman and a Latina. Powell is president and CEO of Latino Flavored Productions Inc. Admission is free for the William Paterson community, and $3 for the public. All proceeds benefit the Hurricane Relief Fund.

“No Turning Back,” by Jesus Nebot, who wrote, produced, directed and starred in the film which is based on actual Latino immigration experiences, and the need to assimilate into society, will be screened on October 20 at 7 p.m. in the Cheng Library Auditorium on the campus in Wayne. Admission is free.

A landmark integration case, Mendez vs. Westminster, filed in California in 1945, which outlawed the segregation of Mexican American children in California public schools, will be discussed in a lecture by Sylvia Mendez, daughter of Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez, who filed the suit on her behalf. Sylvia Mendez, now a retired nurse, will be on hand to share her experiences during and after the lawsuit, which is said to have set a precedent for the Brown vs. the Board of Education case. The lecture will be held on October 18 at 12:30 p.m. in the Atrium Auditorium on the campus in Wayne.

Other events include a lecture on Latino politics on October 5, and a performance by Bobby Gonzalez, lecturer, storyteller and poet, on October 25.  Details on these events are attached below. For additional information, contact the William Paterson Office of Campus Activities and Student Leadership, at 973-720-3244.
