North Indian Dance and Music to be Performed at William Paterson University

A lively mix of classical North Indian music and dance will be presented along with new American music in a performance at William Paterson University on October 22 at 7 p.m. in Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne.

“New Directions: From Asia to America,” features the highly acclaimed Kathak dancer Janaki Patrik, who will appear along with her dance company, The Kathak Ensemble and Friends. They will perform classical Kathak dance, a traditional style of dance which incorporates the storytelling techniques called “katha,” accompanied by Hindustani music. Using these tools, the dance company creates its own innovative repertoire, combining classical movements with modern American art forms.

Patrik performs with her dance partner, Anup Kumar Das, her students, and an illustrious musical ensemble, including Pandit Ramesh Misra, sarangi; Steve Gorn, bamboo flute and saxophone; Usha Kallianpurkar, Hindustani vocal; and Narendra Budhakar, tabla drums.

Also on the program is Maya Kulkarni Chadda, professor of political science and a faculty member of the Asian studies program at William Paterson University, who is a leading exponent of Bharat Natyam, having studied dance under gurus Parvati Kumar, Jayalaxmi Alva, Dandayuthpani Pillai, and Kittappa Pillai. She also trained under Kalanidhi Narayan in mime and expressions. She has toured extensively in India and the U.S., having performed at Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, Lincoln Center, and Symphony Space, among others.

In addition to the Kathak Ensemble, music will be provided by Payton McDonald, an assistant professor of music at William Paterson, and a tabla drummer. MacDonaldwas awarded a 2004 grant from the American Institute of Indian Studies for further study of tabla drumming under master Pandit Sharda Sahai. His quintet performs a unique style of music that brings together the classical traditions of North India with experimental American music. This performance features original North American compositions, instrumentation, and tap dancing.

Tickets for the performance at $15 for reserved seats; $12 for senior citizens; and $8 for students with valid IDs. For tickets and additional information, please call the Shea Center Box Office at 973.720.2371.
