William Paterson University Observes Women’s History Month

Lectures, performances and forums support the theme of “Women Change America” during William Paterson University’s observance of Women’s History Month in March. Events listed include:

Monday, February 28
Women in Business Forum

Women entrepreneurs provide information about starting businesses, 8:30 a.m. to
10:30 a.m. Valley Road Building Room V1012.

Tuesday, March 1
SuChin Pak to Speak

SuChin Pak, a MTV News Correspondent, will kick off Women’s History Month at
12:30 p.m. in the Atrium Auditorium. Pak has hosted shows on MTV including “Total Request Live” and the “MTV Movie Awards 2004 Pre-Show.”

Wednesday, March 2
Lecture on Women in Colonial Latin America

Ana Gomez, assistant professor of history, to present lecture on “Women in Colonial Latin America,” 6 to 7 p.m. in Raubinger 313.

Thursday, March 3
Dr. Lucia McMahon, assistant professor of history, will present “Voice for Change in the Women’s Suffrage Movement” at 12:30 p.m. in the David and Lorraine Cheng Library Auditorium. Scenes from the HBO TV film “Iron-Jawed Angels” will also be presented and a discussion will follow.
“Yo Soy Latina,” a play that delves into the lives of six Latina women who grew up bilingual and bicultural in the United States, will be staged at the Shea Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 standard and free for William Paterson faculty, staff and students.

Saturday, March 5
8th Annual Sister to Sister Conference

“Designing a New You.” The keynote speaker is Joan Morgan, an award-winning journalist and author of “When Chickenheads Come Home To Roost.” The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Valley Road Cafeteria. Registration required, please call x2747.

Tuesday, March 8
Multicultural Fashion Show-Women from Around the World

12:30 p.m., Atrium Lobby.

International Students Read to Local Children
Students will read selected works of women from around the world in the Child Development Center. All day.

Wednesday, March 9
Jennifer Jones, Rutgers University, to Present Lecture on Women in 18th Century France, 11 to 12:15 p.m., Machuga Student Center 203-205.
Film: Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House, 7 to 9 p.m., David and Lorraine Cheng Library Auditorium.

Tuesday, March 22
Clothes Line Project
Design a shirt illustrating your opinions of violence against women, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Morrison Hall Conference Room

Tuesday, March 29
Rivka Solomon to Present Lecture on Women and Girl’s Empowerment
Rivka Solomon, author of “That Takes Ovaries,” a collection of bold women’s stories from around the world, will present a lecture at 12:30 p.m. in the David and Lorraine Cheng Library Auditorium.

Careers in Women’s Studies
An alumni panel discusses past experiences and potential opportunities for current students, 7-to 9 p.m. Paterson Room, David and Lorraine Cheng Library.

Thursday, March 31
Closing Ceremony-Student Essays
A closing ceremony honoring women student writers will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the Atrium Auditorium.

Women and Music Night
An event highlighting William Paterson female student musicians will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Starbuck’s Café.

The event is sponsored by the University’s Women’s History Month Committee, the Student Government Association, the J. Victor Machuga Foundation/Campus Activities and Student Leadership, The Women’s Center, the Departments of Women’s Studies, Languages and Cultures and History and the Student Activities Programming Board.
