Conference on Globalization to be Held at William Paterson University
Former U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka to speak

Teresita C. Schaffer, former U.S. ambassador to Sri Lanka and director of the South Asia program center for strategic and international studies, will address the effect of the changing global economy at a conference at William Paterson University in Wayne on Thursday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the 1600 Valley Road building. The event, titled “Global Issues,” is sponsored by the University’s Christos M. Cotsakos College of Business. Admission is free and open to the public.

The conference will explore the positive and negative effects of globalization within China and India, two of the world’s most populous nations. The event will feature three morning sessions from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and Schaffer’s lecture at 2 p.m.

Pingfan Hong, a senior economic affairs officer at the department of economic and social affairs of the United Nations, presents the first session, titled “The Rise of the Chinese Economy and its Global Implications.” Hong is responsible for providing global economic outlooks to various UN reports and publications, including the World Economic and Social Survey and the LINK Global Economic Outlook. He received his doctorate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Joydeep Mukherji, director of Sovereign Ratings Group, Standard and Poor’s, will moderate a discussion, “Globalization in the Twenty-first Century.” Mukherji who deals with credit ratings in Asia and the Western Hemisphere, has also worked as an economic consultant to the Asian Development Bank in the Philippines and as a financial journalist with Canada’s Globe and Mail

Paul Eichelman, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Leo Burnett Worldwide, will present “Cultural Issues and Methodology: Perspectives of a CFO.” Eichelman is responsible for the financial operations of the country’s second largest advertising agency and world’s seventh largest agency network. He has also served as the agency’s regional finance director in Europe.

Schaffer has devoted most of her foreign service career to South Asia. She has become one of the principal state department experts in the region, as well as in international economics. Schaffer has held high-level positions throughout South Asia and the Middle East. She has also published several books and has had articles appear in Far Eastern Economic Review and Foreign Service Journal.
