Richard Gephardt, a former house Majority Leader, who served in the U. S. House of Representatives for 28 years, will speak as part of William Paterson University’s Distinguished Lecturer Series on Friday, April 21.

A limited number of single tickets for the lecture may be available at the Shea Center Box Office on April 17. For ticket availability, and to purchase single tickets, please call the box office at 973-720-2371 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.; prices are $32 standard; $30 for senior citizens and William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni; $10 for William Paterson students; and $14 for students from other schools. The lecture begins at 8 p.m. in Shea Center on campus; parking is free.

Gephardt’s address, “Opportunity, Responsibility, and Community: Building Strength,” touches on his expertise on economic issues and foreign affairs garnered from his more than two decades in congress, where he gained wide respect nationally.

He ran for President in 1988 and 2004 Democratic campaigns. In 1989, he was elected Majority Leader, and he served until the Republicans took control of Congress. His colleagues in the House then voted him Minority Leader. In 1994, he was elected House Democratic Leader, the highest-ranking Democratic leader in the House of Representatives. Accomplishments as a Representative include working to pass a plan to slash the deficit, invest in education and cut taxes for working families.

After earning a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University, he earned a law degree from Michigan Law School. He began his career as a precinct captain and was twice elected alderman. After winning a seat to represent Missouri’s Third Congressional District in 1976 in the House, Gephardt, as a House freshman, was appointed to serve on both the Ways and Means Committee, and the Budget Committee, becoming a national leader on health care, trade, and tax fairness.
