William Paterson University’s 2006-2007 Distinguished Lecturer Series Features Programs on the Arts, History, Sports and Law

William Paterson University’s 27th Distinguished Lecturer Series on campus in Wayne will feature a range of programs and formats featuring:

  • Steven Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and The Sopranos discusses his music, acting and life with renowned director Peter Bogdanovich on October 13, 2006.
  • Doris Kearns Goodwin, historian and television commentator discusses Lincoln and leadership based on her best-selling book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln on November 17, 2006.
  • Phil Simms, TV football analyst and former star quarterback, engages the audience in a pre-Super Bowl conversation moderated by Sports Illustrated’s Peter King on January 26, 2007.
  • Chief Justice Deborah Poritz, who retires from the New Jersey Supreme Court in October, reflects on her years as Chief Justice and state Attorney General in an interview to be taped for broadcast on One-on-One with Steve Adubato on March 16, 2007.

Subscriptions for the series are $115 for the general public and $35 for William Paterson students. A limited number of single tickets may be available at the Shea Center Box Office for the first lecture as of September 28, and for all remaining lectures on October 17. All lectures begin at 8 p.m. in Shea Center on campus in Wayne. Parking is free.

Steven Van Zandt, who is known throughout the world as the lead guitarist in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and as Silvio Dante on the hit HBO show, The Sopranos, will engage in a conversation with his friend, Peter Bogdanovich on October 13, 2006. Van Zandt, an acclaimed musician, human rights activist (the United Nations has honored him twice for his achievements), actor, and radio host, is not only a member of the E Street Band, he is a noted solo artist, record producer, and songwriter. Currently, he hosts a weekly syndicated radio show, "Little Steven’s Underground Garage," and has created program formats on satellite radio. Bogdanovich has directed 25 films, including two Oscar-winners, The Last Picture Show and Paper Moon. He has made a lasting impact on the industry, is widely recognized for his superb craftsmanship and assured handling of actors, has a recurring role on the Emmy Award-winning show, The Sopranos, and has authored fourteen books and dozens of articles and program notes about Hollywood.

Author Doris Kearns Goodwin’s best-selling book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, won the 2006 Lincoln Prize for an outstanding work about the president or Civil War. Kearns Goodwin, who will speak on November 17, 2006, is a world-renowned, best-selling historian, and one-time presidential advisor, who has been reporting on American government, politics, and baseball for more than two decades. Author of several books, she has written for leading national publications and is a TV commentator, consultant, and on-air personality for various networks.

On January 26, 2007, just nine days before Super Bowl XLI, the DLS audience will have a unique opportunity to chat with Phil Simms about the big game, his insights as a top NFL television analyst and his years as a superstar quarterback. Peter King, the senior football writer for Sports Illustrated (SI), will moderate the town-hall-style meeting. As an All-Pro quarterback, Simms played his entire 15-year career with the New York Giants, leading them to two Super Bowl titles and holds 19 team records. He joined CBS Sports in January 1998 and is the lead analyst for the network’s NFL coverage. Peter King joined SI as a staff writer in 1989 after spending nearly a decade as an award-winning newspaper journalist. A writer who has won many awards for excellence throughout his journalism career, he is SI’sprimary NFL expert and is one of the country’s premier pro football writers and commentators.

Chief Justice Deborah Poritz has affected the lives of New Jerseyans for many years as the state’s first female chief justice of the Supreme Court and the first female attorney general. Poritz, who will speak on March 16, 2007, was appointed as chief justice in July 1996 after she served as the state’s attorney general, as well as deputy and assistant attorney general. From 1989 to 1990, she served as chief counsel to Governor Thomas Kean. Poritz will discuss her impressive career and the major issues that she faced when she is interviewed by Emmy-Award winning anchor Steve Adubato. Their interaction will air on his TV program, One-on-One with Steve Adubato, on CN8-The Comcast Network throughout the east coast. Adubato is a television anchor and broadcaster on both public television and cable, as well as an author, commentator, motivational speaker, university lecturer, and columnist.
