Darryl "DMC" McDaniels of the Legendary Run-DMC to host "Spoken Word Speaks" Open Mic Night at William Paterson University

Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, known for being part of the rap group Run-DMC, will host Spoken Word Speaks!, an open mic evening of spoken word poetry, at William Paterson University in Wayne on Wednesday, December 6.  The event will begin at 7 p.m. in Shea Center.  Admission is free.

The event will open with the Hip Hop group Epitome, featuring Ced "Tha Arch Bishop" and Maza "The Messenger." Epitome has opened for many performers, including Dead Prez and Flipmode squad. Their latest CD is titled “Something’s Terribly Wrong Vol. 1. (And While the People Slept)” DJ IRS will provide the music for the evening. He has spun for venues such as Culture Shock in New York City, Full Spectrum in New Jersey, and New Jersey Youth Poetry Slam events, to name a few.

The poetry features for the evening will be performance poets Taalam Acey, Rainmaker, and Latoya will perform their spoken word poetry.

Acey, winner of the special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, has been a well-known spoken word artist for more than seven years. He has been featured on BET, published two novels and released nine CDs. He performs and lectures at colleges and universities all over the world and is also a well-known slam poet in the United States, England, and Germany.

Rainmaker, who specializes in political poetry, is also a slam poet who has been on the legendary Nuyorican Poetry slam team several times. He has performed at the Apollo Theatre and Sugar Shack in Harlem among many other venues. His latest CD is entitled “Between the Clouds and the Silver Linings. He is the author of the book, “The Rise of Consciousness.”

Latoya Pinckney, an honors graduate of William Paterson University with a bachelor’s degree in communication and theatre, is now a full-time performance poet as well as a poetry host, show coordinator, and workshop facilitator. She has featured throughout New York and New Jersey, and is also an accomplished slam poet. Pinckney has published Deep Inside Me.

McDaniels was one of three artists in the pioneering rap group Run-DMC which included Rev Run, DMC and the late Jam Master Jay. They sold over 30 million CDs during their hip hop career. DMC has released a new solo CD entitled “Checks, Thugs and Rock ‘n Roll” (RomenMpire Records/Rags 2 Riches Records). His Web site is WWW.ME-DMC.COM.
