WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOLD 25TH ANNUAL BILINGUAL/ESL CONFERENCE
ON APRIL 1

Changes in the educational strategies for teaching bilingual/English as a second language during the past 25 years, as well as challenges for the future, will be the focus of William Paterson University’s 25th Annual Bilingual/ESL Conference on Saturday, April 1 on the University’s campus in Wayne.  The event, designed for language educators, will run from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the University’s building at 1600 Valley Road.  The fee is $99 and includes lunch.  The event, originally scheduled for December 9, 2005, was postponed due to inclement weather.

Dr. Catherine Snow, the Henry Lee Shattuck Professor of Education at Harvard University and an expert on language and literacy development, will deliver via teleconference the 10:30 a.m. keynote address, “Reading First and Reading Next: the Challenges of Literacy Achievement for Second Language Speakers.”  The author of numerous books, including Preparing Our Teachers: Opportunities for Better Reading Instruction, Snow has served as editor of Applied Psycholinguistics, a highly respected journal for language educators, and chaired RAND Reading Study Group and the Committee on the Prevention of Reading Difficulties in Young Children, National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences.

In addition, the conference will include 17 workshops on a variety of topics such as the art of questioning for successful language learning, vocabulary building, human rights curricula, wordless picture books, culture-specific learning behavior, meeting the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse learners, and the impact of the “No Child Left Behind” legislation on bilingual/ESL programs, among others. A special panel, featuring four past presidents of the New Jersey Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages/New Jersey Bilingual Educators, will reflect on the history and future development of bilingual education in New Jersey.

Launched in 1981, the conference is recognized as one of the most comprehensive language education forums in New Jersey, and regularly draws several hundred educators as participants.  The event is sponsored by William Paterson University’s Bilingual/ESL Graduate Program, Department of Languages and Cultures, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Center for Continuing Education and Distance Learning.  For additional information or registration information, contact Diane Davidson at the Center for Continuing Education and Distance Learning at 973-720-3709 or davidsond@wpunj.edu or visit www.wpunj.edu/educator .
