Hobart Manor Recital Series Continues on February 3

The Hobart Manor Recital Series continues with a performance by the Friends and Enemies of New Music on Sunday, February 5 at 5 p.m. in historic Hobart Manor located on the campus of William Paterson University in Wayne. A post-performance wine and cheese reception, included in the $35 ticket, begins at 6 p.m.; tickets for the recital only are $20.

The program will feature two recent works by John Link, professor of music at William Paterson University, which explore the interface between human and computer-generated sound. “Only Human” (2005) combines a live performance by clarinet virtuoso Marianne Gythfeldt with her own prerecorded clarinet sounds. “Life Studies” (2004) is based on a recording of a Shakespeare sonnet transformed by computer processing. Also featured in the concert will be Ben Yarmolinsky performing his own “Guitar Sonata” (2004), which mixes Latin rhythms with elements of jazz, blues, and popular song in a unique and accessible style, and Tom Cipullo’s dramatic song cycle on poems by Marilyn Kallet, “How to Get Heat Without Fire” (2001), with soprano Melanie Mitrano and the composer at the piano.

Friends and Enemies of New Music, founded in New York City in 1989, now consists of three composers: Cipullo, Link, and Yarmolinsky. The group's principal artistic goals are to present high quality concerts of contemporary American chamber music, to feature a wide variety of aesthetic viewpoints and musical styles, and to do so in an atmosphere that is entertaining and enjoyable as well as intellectually stimulating. Repertoire is divided between works by the three members of the group, works by young and emerging composers (such as Alla Borzova, Artur Kampela, and Daniel Bernard Roumain) and works by more established composers (such as Elliott Carter, David Del Tredici, Charles Dodge, Leon Kirchner, Thea Musgrave, Shulamit Ran, and Ned Rorem). Over the past sixteen years they have performed more than 400 works by almost 200 composers, including over 150 world premieres.

The Hobart Manor Recital Series is underwritten, in part, by William Paterson University. It is also funded, in part, by the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council at Passaic County Community College through the State/County Block Grant Program of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
