William Paterson University to Observe Latino Heritage Month
--Cinema, theater and the spoken word are part of William Paterson University’s celebration of Latino Heritage Month this month on campus

The observance includes a performance of La Gringa on October 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Shea Center. The play, which will be performed in Spanish with English translation provided via wireless headphones, is a comedy about a young Nuyorican named Maria who lives in New York City and decides to visit her family in Puerto Rico to reconnect with her heritage. The play is staged by El Repertorio Espanol, an award-winning leader in Spanish language theater for more than 35 years. Tickets are $15; $8 for students.

On October 16, a screening of the film “Transformations,” which had its world premiere at the New York International Latino Film Festival in July, will be followed by a discussion with the director and members of the cast who will give a behind-the-scenes perspective of the production of the film. The film deals with the nature of crime and violence in the inner city, and will be screened in the Martini Teleconference Center in Hobart Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

A conference designed to bring multidisciplinary perspectives to the study of the social, cultural, political and economic impact of the Latino population in U.S. urban centers will be held at William Paterson University on Thursday, October 19. The conference, “Latinos in U.S. Cities: Power, Politics and Culture,” to be held from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the University’s Valley Road building, brings together leading specialists in the fields of history and the social sciences, whose work encompasses Latino and urban studies. Geared to social studies and world language teachers, politicians and other community advocates, the conference will feature three panels and a keynote address. Admission is $75; $25 for faculty and graduate students.
