WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO PRESENT THEATER PRODUCTION BY EL REPERTORIO ESPANOL
La Gringa to be performed in Spanish; English translation available via wireless headphones

El Repertorio Espanol, an award-winning leader in Spanish language theater for more than 35 years, presents La Gringa, the tale of a native New Yorker who travels to Puerto Rico in search of her roots, on Tuesday, October 10 at William Paterson University in Wayne.  The production will be presented in Spanish, with English translation provided via wireless headphones.  Two performances, at 12:30 p.m. (school groups welcome) and 7:30 p.m., will be held in Shea Center; tickets are $15, $8 for students.

The production is part of William Paterson’s new Vistas Series which is designed to serve the University’s students and faculty, as well as the surrounding multicultural community, by offering a number of creative and educational programs.

La Gringa is a comedy about a young Nuyorican (a Puerto Rican living in New York) named Maria who has completed her degree in Puerto Rican studies and decides to visit Puerto Rico to visit her extended family and reconnect with her heritage.  Her presence is met with ambivalence and skepticism, and she is turned down for a job because she is not a native islander but a “gringa.” Maria has a spiritual awakening when visiting El Yunque, the rain forest, and realizes that being Puerto Rican has always been a part of her life.

El Repertorio Espanol introduces U.S. audiences to the best of Latin American, Spanish, and Hispanic American theater. Throughout the years the theater company has presented and commissioned new plays by Hispanic American playwrights and inaugurated an infrared simultaneous translation system, which provides an opportunity for non-Spanish speaking audiences to enjoy the company’s vast selection of plays.

The afternoon matinee is a standard performance followed by a question and answer session.  Headphones for the English translation must be reserved in advance when purchasing tickets.  For additional information or to purchase tickets, please call the Shea Center Box Office at 973-720-2371 or visit the University’s website at www.wpunj.edu.
