William Paterson University to Sponsor Conference on Linguistic Differences

A conference for teachers that explores the issues of language for culturally and linguistically diverse children will be held at William Paterson University on October 28.

“Diagnosis of Linguistic Difference vs. Language Disorder in Culturally Diverse Children,” will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the University’s building at 1600 Valley Road in Wayne. Admission is $145 and includes materials and two meals.

During the event, participants will become familiar with aspects of second language learning, and how they can be distinguished from a language problem. Specific case profiles and presenters’ original work will be also be shared. Participants will gain knowledge of the efficacy of non-biased forms of assessment and why they are more precise and valid. Other topics include the use of non-biased protocols of assessment that will facilitate the appropriate diagnosis and decrease the frequency of misdiagnosis. Participants will also learn how to support the needs of diverse learners and the appropriate time to refer them for special education assessment.

The conference is coordinated by the University’s Center for Continuing and Professional Education. For information on registering, please call 973-720-2354 or visit the Web site at www.wpunj.edu/cpe.
