William Paterson University’s Center for Continuing and Professional Education to Sponsor a Conference on the Impact of Latinos on U.S. Urban Centers on October 19 

A conference designed to bring multi-disciplinary perspectives to the study of the social, cultural, political and economic impact of the Latino population in U. S. urban centers will be held at William Paterson University on Thursday, October 19.

The conference, “Latinos in U.S. Cities: Power, Politics and Culture,” to be held from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at 1600 Valley Road in Wayne, brings together leading specialists in the fields of history and the social sciences, whose work encompasses Latino and urban studies. Geared to social studies and world language teachers, politicians and other community advocates, the conference will feature three panels and a keynote address. Admission is $75; $25 for faculty and graduate students. 

The first panel begins at 9:15 a. m. and will be moderated by Michael Innis-Jimenez, instructor of history, William Paterson, who will discuss the historical perspectives of Latino culture. Panelists are Virginia Sanchez Korrol, Brooklyn College, and author of "A Tale of Two Cities: Latina Activists in New York and South Florida," and Matt Garcia, Brown University, who is the author of Geographies of Latinidad: Mapping, Latina/o Identity and Community Formation in the 21st Century.”

“Political Perspectives,” moderated by Wartyna Davis, associate professor of political science at William Paterson, will begin at 11 a.m.  Panelists are Silvia Pedraza, University of Michigan, author of "The Impossible Triangle: Cuba, the U.S., and the Exiles," and Arlene Davis, New York University, who authored "Latinos: More American than the Americans?" and "The Politics of Citizenship and Race."

A keynote address by Juan Flores, Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center, will be held at 12:30 p.m. His lecture will focus on “Triple Consciousness? Afro-Latinos on the Color Line.”

The third panel will convene at 2 p.m. to discuss “The Regional Perspective.” Yolanda Prieto, Ramapo College, author of Union City: Cuba’s Northern- Most Province, and Carmen Whalen, Williams College, author of Urban Labors: Puerto Rican Women and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, and New York City’s Garment Industry, are the panelists.

At 3:45 p.m. a roundtable discussion will commence. Moderated by Evelyn Gonzalez and Howard Lune, William Paterson University professors, the discussion offers the audience an opportunity to interact with the panelists in a question and answer session.

A poster session will be open all day focused on the demographics of the Latino population in the United States.
