WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY OFFERS WIDE VARIETY OF CULTURAL EVENTS

—Performances include contemporary musicians, a hot young comic, Spanish and English speaking theatre, and a new comedy festival

William Paterson University in Wayne will present a diverse array of cultural programming during the 2006-2007 academic year, ranging from concerts by contemporary musical artists to professional theatrical productions.

William Paterson’s new Vistas Series, one of its premier presenting series designed to serve William Paterson students and faculty as well as the surrounding multicultural community, will offer a number of creative and educational programs.

A one-night-only performance of William Shakespeare’s tragic love story, Romeo and Juliet, presented by the Aquila Theatre Company, a New York-based professional theatre company dedicated to classical drama, will be staged on Friday, September 29 at 8 p.m. in Shea Center.  To keep the audience fully engaged in this well-known Shakespeare classic, Aquila will ask the audience to decide which actors play which role.  Tickets range from $10 to $20.

El Repertorio Espanol, an award-winning leader in Spanish language theatre for more than 35 years, presents “La Gringa,” the tale of a native New Yorker who travels to Puerto Rico in search of her roots, on Tuesday, October 10 at 12:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. in Shea Center. The production will be presented in Spanish, with English translation provided via wireless headphones.  Tickets range from $8 to $15.

Mike Birbiglia, one of the youngest comics to debut on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” brings his stand-up talents to the Shea Center stage on Thursday, January 25, 2007 at 8 p.m.  Birbiglia, who toured last year with his “Medium Man on Campus” show, has been featured in two comedy specials on Comedy Central. Tickets range from $10 to $25.

Legendary singer/songwriters John Gorka and Dar Williams will perform live together for the first time in a concert of contemporary music on Friday, March 30, 2007 at 8 p.m.  Gorka is a native of New Jersey known for his mellow baritone; Williams, whose music often focuses on social and environmental issues, has been compared to Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez.  Tickets range from $10 to $32.

The art of comedy-percussion is on display with BAM! The Blue Barrel Show on Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 7 p.m. in Shea Center. An award-winning trio from Canada, BAM! The Blue Barrel Show features side-splitting comedy and virtuoso drumming.  Tickets range from $8 to $15.

The Vistas Series also includes special productions for high school students including a performance of Repertorio Español’s presentation of La Gringa at 12:30 p.m. on October 10, 2006.  Family shows for children include About Jack Frost, presented by Connecticut Children’s Theatre on December 10 at 2 p.m. and the children’s classic Charlotte’s Web on April 15, 2007 at 2 p.m.  Tickets for both shows, to be held in Shea Center, are $8.  As part of Family Week at the Theatre, The Pushcart Players will present Stone Soup and Other Stories on March 3, 2007 at 2 p.m.; tickets are $6 for adults and free for those under 21.

In addition to the Vistas Series, other upcoming Shea Center events include the inaugural season of the William Paterson University Comedy Festival.  The three-week Festival, presented by the William Paterson Department of Communication, will include comedy sketches on November 16-19, and a stand-up comedy competition for college students on November 39, December 3, and December 7 to 9 in Hunziker Black Box Theatre.

The University will also offer its Third Annual New Jersey Playwrights Competition.  Staged readings of works by the competition’s three semifinalists will be staged in Hunziker Black Box Theatre October 24 to 26 at 7 p.m.  The winner will receive a fully staged production of his or her play in February 2007.
