William Paterson University to Hold Workshop on the Relationship Between Language/Learning Disorders and Writing on October 27
—Dr. Patricia Prelock, chair of communication sciences at University of Vermont, is presenter

A professional development workshop designed to provide speech-language pathologists and special education, resource room and reading teachers with essential information on the relationship between language/learning disorders and problems with writing among school-aged children will be held at William Paterson University in Wayne on Saturday, October 27 from 8:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the University’s building at 1600 Valley Road.  The cost of the workshop is $150, $50 for students.

The workshop, “Written Language Assessment and Intervention for the School Aged Children with Language Learning Disabilities,” will be presented by Dr. Patricia Prelock, professor and chairperson of the Department of Communication Sciences at the University of Vermont.  She will discuss the impact of deficits in executive function on written language and offer specific recommendations regarding assessment and intervention strategies for writing difficulties in language learning disabled children.

Dr. Prelock, who is a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, is also a board recognized child language specialist.  She has published and presented extensively in the areas of professional collaboration, phonology, language assessment and intervention, and autism, and has won several awards, including the 2003 University Scholar Award presented by the University of Vermont in recognition of sustained excellence in research and scholarly activities.  Dr. Prelock holds a doctorate in speech-language pathology with a concentration in cognitive psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.

The workshop is sponsored by William Paterson’s Department of Communication Disorders and Center for Continuing and Professional Education.  It is approved by the Continuing Board of Education of ASHA; continuing education units are available.  To register, or for more information, contact Nancy Friend at the Center for Continuing and Professional Education at 973-720-3829.
