WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY OBSERVES LATINO HERITAGE MONTH IN OCTOBER

Lectures, theater, art and poetry are part of William Paterson University’s observance of Latino Heritage Month in October on campus.

Performances of “Roosters,” a drama by Milcha Sanchez-Scott, will be held from in the Hunziker Black Box Theatre on campus. “Roosters” brings to life cockfighting and tortilla rolling in southern California.  As a Latino father and son struggle for dominance over a prized rooster, a mother, daughter and aunt search for their worth as women. Show times for “Roosters” are 8 p.m. on October 23-27 and 3 p.m. on October 28. Tickets are $12, $8 for students, senior citizens and members of the William Paterson University community. Blas Falconer, an assistant professor of English at Austin Peay State University where he teaches poetry and memoir writing, will read from his book of poetry, “A Question of Gravity and Light,” on October 24 at 12:30 p.m. in the Cheng Library Auditorium. He is the poetry editor of Zone 3 magazine and the Zone 3 Press. His poems focus on the themes of family, love and Puerto Rico.

The author of “Queer Latino Testimonio, Keith Haring, and Juanito Xtravaganza: Hard Tails,” Arnaldo Cruz-Malave, an associate professor of Spanish and contemporary literature, and associate director of the Latin American and Latino Studies Institute at Fordham University, will read from his non-fiction book on October 30 at 2 p.m. in the Atrium Auditorium. A reception will follow in Atrium 126.

A panel discussion, “Latin American Women Perspectives,” will be moderated by Maria Villar, associate professor of anthropology and director of the Latin American and Latino Studies program, on October 31 at 12:30 p.m. in the Cheng Library Auditorium. Panelists include William Paterson professors Rosa Soto, English, and Claudia Baez-Camargo, political science and history.

The Spanish Club is offering free peer tutoring during the month to students who are Spanish majors or minors, or those who are taking Spanish classes. To access the tutoring email orsitab@student.wpunj.edu.
