WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY IN WAYNE NAMES DAVID REID EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF RUSS BERRIE INSTITUTE FOR PROFESSIONAL SALES; ROBERT PETERSON APPOINTED CHAIRPERSON OF DEPARTMENT OF PROFESSIONAL SALES

William Paterson University has announced the appointments of Dr. David A. Reid as executive director of the Russ Berrie Institute for Professional Sales and Dr. Robert M. Peterson as chair of the Department of Professional Sales.

The Russ Berrie Institute for Professional Sales at William Paterson University is the first program of its kind in the Northeast.  In addition to customized training programs for sales professionals, a bachelor of science degree in professional sales—the first of its kind in the world—is offered through the Department of Professional Sales in the University’s Christos M. Cotsakos College of Business, which gained international accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International.

Reid, who joined William Paterson in 2004, is also a professor of professional sales at the University.  He has long championed the field of professional sales and been instrumental in developing and establishing innovative university-housed sales programs. In his previous position as chair of the University’s Department of Professional Sales, one of the only departments of sales at an AACSB-accredited university, Reid led the efforts in creating the country’s first full bachelor of science degree in professional sales.  Prior to joining William Paterson, Reid was the Edward H. Schmidt Professor of Sales and Business Marketing at the University of Toledo, where he established and led the creation of the Savage and Associates Center for Advanced Sales and later secured funding for the creation of the Edward H. Schmidt School of Professional Sales.  He also has served as executive director and conference chair for the National Conference in Sales Management.  His research has appeared in numerous journals including Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing, and Journal of Business-to-Business Marketing, among others.  Reid earned a Ph.D. and M.B.A. from the State University of New York at Binghamton and a B.S. in business administration from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. He and his wife Pat have two daughters, Emily and Maggie.

Peterson joined the William Paterson faculty in 2005.  Nationally recognized for outstanding and innovative teaching, he earned the American Marketing Association 2002 Innovative Teacher Award, the 2006 University Sales Center Alliance Innovative Sales Educator Award, and the Academy of Educational Leadership's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2001 for entrepreneurial education.  Prior to joining the University, Peterson taught at the University of Portland where he earned the Outstanding Award for Entrepreneurial Education from the university and three additional teaching awards from the students.  He has extensive sales experience, including positions as sales representative with Duplex Products, a national printer of forms and four-color products, and as a marketing manager and an account executive with Data Broadcasting Corporation where he sold real-time financial data for the stock and commodity markets.  He also spent a year in Japan as the International Exchange Coordinator for the City of Tonami.  Peterson’s research has been published in Business Horizons, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of World Business, Entrepreneurial Executive, and Journal of Marketing Education, among others.  He also served on the board of the National Conference in Sales Management for seven consecutive years and won three Best Session awards at the U.S. Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship Conference (2005, 2004, and 2001).  A graduate of Indiana University, Peterson earned an M.B.A. from George Washington University and a Ph.D. from the University of Memphis.  He and his wife Alexandra are the proud parents of twins, a boy (Mason) and a girl (McKenzie).

William Paterson University, one of the nine state colleges and universities in New Jersey, offers 33 undergraduate and 19 graduate programs through five colleges: Arts and Communication, the Christos M. Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health.  Located on 370 hilltop acres in Wayne, the University enrolls nearly 11,000 students and provides housing for nearly 2,700 students. The institution’s 366 full-time faculty are highly distinguished and diverse scholars and teachers, many of whom are recipients of prestigious awards and grants from the Fulbright Program, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the American Philosophical Society.
