WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO PRESENT SPOKEN WORD ARTISTS THE LAST POETS ON FEBRUARY 7

The Last Poets, the seminal spoken-word artists from the 1960s, will present an evening of performance poetry and performance poetry workshops for high school and college students, on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at William Paterson University in Wayne.  The event is being held as part of the University’s observance in February of African Heritage Month.

The evening performance begins at 8 p.m. in Shea Center for the Performing Arts on campus.  Admission is $10, $5 for members of the William Paterson community, and $3 for students.  Performance poetry workshops, which encompass poetry writing techniques and the theatrical aspects of performing spoken word poetry, as well as African American history, culture, and other elements of the black experience through poetry, will be held in Shea Center at 10 a.m. for high school students and 2 p.m. for William Paterson students; admission to the workshops is free.  Advance reservations are required for the workshops; contact the Shea Center Box Office at 973-720-2371.

Hailed for the fiery intensity of their politics and their poetry from the moment they emerged from Harlem in the late 1960s, the Last Poets are comprised of poets Umar Bin Hassan and Abiodun Oyewole and drummer Don “Babtunde” Eaton.  They have made more than a dozen recordings, from their early classics “The Last Poets” and “This Is Madness,” to their latest release, “Time Has Come.”

The event, part of University Performing Arts’ Vistas Series, designed to serve the University’s students and faculty, as well as the surrounding multicultural community, is also linked to the University’s series of open mic events, Spoken Word Speaks, hosted by DMC, the legendary hip hop artist.  The next event, featuring Shadokat, will be held on Thursday, February 15 at 8 p.m.  For information, call the Shea Center Box Office at 973-720-2371.
