Students from across the Garden State will compete for laughs during William Paterson University’s Second Annual Comedy Festival to be held from November 28 to December 8 on the campus in Wayne, N.J.

The festival kicks off on Wednesday, November 28 with current students and alumni of William Paterson’s acclaimed course in comedy writing and performing doing their stand-up comedy acts at 8 p.m. in the Hunziker Black Box Theatre. Several alumni who have taken the class are now working as stand-up comedians.

Students from across the state are invited to compete for four awards: The Funniest College in New Jersey, The Funniest College Student in New Jersey, Funniest Female Student in New Jersey, and Funniest Male Student in New Jersey.  Preliminaries will be held on Friday, November 30 at 8 p.m. and trophies will be awarded on Saturday, December 1 at 8:30 p.m. in the Martini Room in Hobart Hall on campus.  Clayton Fletcher, a stand-up comedian, will emcee; a professional panel of comedy writers and/or performers will serve as judges.

A Sketch Comedy Show will be held on Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 8 at 8 p.m. in the Hunziker Black Box Theatre.  Students from William Paterson and the outside community will perform Saturday Night Live-type sketches. Students enrolled in the University’s sketch comedy course over the past several years will present their best sketches.

Tickets for all events are $12 standard and $8 for the William Paterson community, senior citizens and students.

For five years, William Paterson students have trained as stand-up comics, comedy writers, and actors as part of the theatre concentration offered as a component of the bachelor’s degree in communication. Each semester, as a final exam, these talented students have delighted packed houses at Gotham Comedy Club in New York City. The festival is sponsored by the University’s Department of Communication. The event is directed by Stephen Rosenfield, who originated the comedy program at William Paterson and is director of the American Comedy Institute in New York City.
