FINANCIAL EXPERT TO LECTURE ON BRITISH EXPLORER SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON AND LEADERSHIP AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY ON WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3
--Arthur Ainsberg, author of Shackleton: Leadership Lessons from Antarctica, to discuss famous British explorer as part of University’s Shier Entrepreneurship Program

Arthur Ainsberg, a well-known figure in the financial services sector and a scholar of the early 20th century explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, will discuss the leadership lessons that can be learned from Shackleton’s 1914 expedition to Antarctica during a Shier Entrepreneurship Program Lecture at William Paterson University in Wayne on Wednesday, December 3, 2008. The lecture will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the 1600 Valley Road Auditorium on campus. Admission is free and the public is invited.

The program is part of a lecture series offered in connection with the University’s new Shier Entrepreneurship Program. The program, announced last spring and housed in the University’s Cotsakos College of Business, is focused on the advancement of entrepreneurship education and practice through the development of strong academic programs with an applied focus. An M.B.A. program with a concentration in entrepreneurship will be launched in fall 2009. The initiative is funded by a generous donation from an alumnus.

Ainsberg has spent many years studying the leadership skills employed by Shackleton, one of the great British explorers of the early 20th century. In 1914 he led an expedition to Antarctica on the Endurance, which became shipwrecked there on January 18, 1915, trapping Shackleton and his 27 crew members on the ice. He and his crew lived atop ice floes for more than a year, eating penguins and seals for survival. Every man under Shackleton’s leadership returned home alive. In his lecture, Ainsberg discusses the leadership lessons that can be learned from Shackleton’s story, which he has written about in his book Shackleton: Leadership Lessons from Antarctica.

A 30-year veteran of the financial services industry, Ainsberg is a member of the board of directors of two NYSE companies: Nomura Securities and National Financial Partners. During his career, he has held positions at Oppenheimer, Morgan Stanley, and Odyssey Partners, one of the largest and most successful hedge funds in history. Ainsberg has served a chairman of the New York State Board of Public Accountancy. A graduate of Baruch College with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration, Ainsberg is a trustee of the Baruch College Fund. He is widely recognized as a lecturer on leadership and corporate governance, securities fraud and business ethics.
