WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY PREMIERES NEW MUSICAL, “MARGOT FRANK: THE DIARY OF THE OTHER YOUNG GIRL,” FROM APRIL 9 TO 14
William Paterson University in Wayne will present a production of “Margot Frank: The Diary of the Other Young Girl,” a new musical, at Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus. Preview performances will be held on April 9 and 10; regular performances are scheduled for April 11 to 14.
As the grand prize winner in the University’s fourth annual New Jersey Playwright’s Competition, “Margot Frank: The Diary of the Other Young Girl” was awarded a fully staged production of the play. The show features book and lyrics by Lori Mooney of Bronx, N.Y. and Diana Rissetto of Wayside, and music by Cooper Cerulo of Ashland, Maine, Michael Sangiovanni of Red Bank and Warren Helms of Mount Tabor.
In “Margot Frank: The Diary of the Other Young Girl,” a high school is set to perform “The Diary of Anne Frank.” Min-Go Friedman, a Chinese-American Jewish teenager, wants to play Anne, but instead wins the role of Margot, Anne’s much-forgotten older sister. In a following dream sequence, Min-Go writes, directs and stars in a play about Anne's much-forgotten older sister, Margot, who also kept a diary, and of course, gets all the best lines. Her classmates come to learn that there are at least two sides to every story.
The educational theatre production is comprised of William Paterson University students and community members. Students in the ensemble are: Drew Cyburt of Hillsborough; Hilary Goldman of Princeton; Lucas Hopper of Hurley, N.Y.; Heather Ivy Horwitz of Fair Lawn; Jessica Kleinwaks of Morris Plains; Bryan Morales of Ocean; and Erik Phelan of Stony Point, N.Y. Community members are Jeanne Newcott of Ramsey and Faith Wu of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Edward Matthews, William Paterson staff member and producer of the New Jersey Playwrights Competition, will direct. William Paterson adjunct faculty member Warren Helms and staff member Shari Selke serve as musical director and production stage manager, respectively. William Paterson student Hilary Goldman serves as choreographer.
Lori Mooney began her career as a news team member and writer for Teen People magazine. She has worked at several talent agencies, most currently at N.S. Bienstock, which represents Dan Rather and Anderson Cooper, and she has been very involved in the theater community, doing surveys for Live Broadway and working for an Off-Broadway improv show. Diana Rissetto works with the Actors’ Equity Association in New York City. She has been published in Teen People magazine.
Preview performances will be held on April 9 at 8:00 p.m. and April 10 at 12:30 p.m.; all tickets are $8.
