PAINTINGS AND SCULPTURE BY NEW JERSEY ARTIST SUSAN LISBIN ON VIEW AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY

The impact of color, line, and medium are explored in a one-person exhibit of paintings and sculpture by New Jersey artist Susan Lisbin at the Ben Shahn Galleries at William Paterson University in Wayne from September 15 through October 17, 2008.  Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Admission is free. A reception for the exhibit will be held on Tuesday, September 16 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

The exhibit features a selection of Lisbin’s recent paintings and sculptures. “As my life transitions, so too does my art,” she explains. “It has become important for me to be less introspective and to entice the viewer with color and defined forms. The energy that is formed on my canvas is respected and is often the catalyst for inspiration.”

Lisbin’s abstract philosophy finds expression in a variety of media and techniques. Space and planes are pushed and at the same time contained. Color is treated as an element joining space and line, yet respected for itself. Line helps define, join, and create areas on the canvas. The use of different mediums, such as paint, graphite, and wire, help create tensions.  “My emotions and my intellect are always at work,” she explains.  “Both are valuable players in my art.”

Her works have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout New Jersey and New York. In 2005, she received a fellowship to attend the Vermont Studio Center. An art teacher in the Millburn School District for the last ten years, she previously worked for Bergen County Special Services as an art teacher. Lisbin is a graduate of Ramapo College and holds a master’s degree from Montclair State University.  She is a resident of Orange.

The exhibit is one of three shows on view concurrently in the Ben Shahn Galleries.  “Ben Wilson:  The Margin as Center,” on view in the South Gallery, provides an overview of the artist’s career beginning in 1930, with special focus on large abstractions created from the 1970s through the 1990s.  On view in the Court Gallery is the annual exhibit of works by the William Paterson University art faculty.

This exhibit is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Ben Shahn Galleries are wheelchair-accessible.  Large-print handouts are available. For additional information, please call the Ben Shahn Galleries at William Paterson University, 973-720-2654.
