WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY TO HOLD 29TH ANNUAL BILINGUAL/ESL CONFERENCE ON DECEMBER 4

A conference designed to address the needs of English language learners with communication disorders will be held on Friday, December 4 at William Paterson University.

The event, “The 29th Annual Bilingual/ESL Conference: Building Blocks of Language: Addressing the Needs of English Language Learners with Communication Disorders,” will run from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the University’s building at 1600 Valley Road in Wayne. The fee is $135; $125 for William Paterson alumni; and $50 for current students, faculty, and staff. Food and materials are included.

The keynote speaker is Deborah Jill Chitester, M.S., CCC/SLP, a bilingual speech pathologist. She is an expert in the development of appropriate assessment techniques to accurately determine if an English language learner (ELL) has a communication disorder, and in identifying issues in second language learning and cultural differences that intervene in the process. She is also an expert in the role of spoken language as a tool for the development of bi-literacy.

In addition, the conference will include a series of workshops for ESL/bilingual professionals on a variety of topics. Workshops are planned for three concurrent sessions beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 3:15 p.m. Topics include fostering multiculturalism in the ELL classroom; addressing the cognitive demands of interpersonal communication skills; and the ways non-verbal communication differs among cultures.

Launched in 1981, the conference is recognized as one of the most comprehensive language education forums in New Jersey, and regularly draws several hundred educators as participants. This year’s event is sponsored by William Paterson University’s Bilingual/ESL Graduate Program, Department of Languages and Cultures, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Education, and Center for Continuing and Professional Education.
