President Speert Addresses Faculty and Staff on First Day of Fall 2007 Semester |
“This state-of-the-art campus center will provide a vibrant environment that will enhance academic and student development and expand social and extracurricular opportunities,” Speert said, referring to the new University Commons, including the new 500-seat Ballroom and meeting room complex and the renovated John Victor Machuga Student Center and Wayne Hall. “We’ve designed the new complex as the heart of the campus, where our entire community will gather and interact.” During his address, Speert outlined an "ambitious and substantive" agenda for the 2007-08 academic year. Among the most critical initiatives during the year ahead, he explained, is the formulation of an academic plan, which is currently being developed by a committee of faculty and academic administrators headed by Edward Weil, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. The plan “will position us to develop new and modified academic programs responsive to our institutional strengths and in service to our students, the region, and the State,” said Speert. The plan, which is anticipated to include a proposal for the University’s first doctoral program, a doctorate in nursing practice, is slated to be ready for discussion by the Board of Trustees in December.
