Philip Cioffari, English, received a scholarship and was named the D.H. Lawrence Fellow at the 2007 University of New Mexico’s Taos Summer Writer’s Workshop. The Fellowship is awarded annually to an emerging writer of fiction or poetry with one book in print or at press.

Ming Fay, art, has received an unrestricted grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts. A sculptor, he is one of 124 fellows, representing eight artistic disciplines, selected this year from a field of 3,000.

Itay Goren ‘04 was a guest artist at the 4th Annual Pacific Music Festival. A pianist, he played music by Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, Debussy and Liszt for a classical concert, played a jazz set and gave a master class to some local students.

Academania, a short film by Gina Guerrieri, communication, has garnered awards and has been shown at numerous film festivals including, the Charlotte Film Festival; the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival; Festival de la Cité in Lausanne, Switzerland; the Heart of Gold International Film Festival, Queensland, Australia; and the L.A. Shorts Fest (Los Angeles International Short Film Festival). It received the
the CINE Golden Eagle Award at the CINE Film & Video Competition; was selected as a semi-finalist at the FADE IN Awards (among the top 90 films out of 2,800+ submissions); and it received a Bronze Remi Award, in the short film category at the
WorldFest International Film Festival.

Eswar Phadia, math, presented a series of lectures on Bayesian Inference, his area of expertise, during spring break at Sun Yat-sen University and South China Agricultural University.

Gabe Vitalone, professor emeritus of curriculum and instruction, and his wife, Evelyn, recently participated in the National Senior Olympics held in Louisville, Ky. Vitalone who competed in the 85-89 age group, won ribbons for finishing in the shot put, the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter walk.  He also won a silver medal in the 1,500-meter race-walk. Evelyn, who competed in the 75 to 79 age group, won three ribbons for the 100-, and 200-meter walk, and the 1,500-meter race-walk.
