In a traditional ceremony that harkens back to medieval times, the University formally welcomed approximately 1,200 first-year students to academic life on Wednesday, September 10 during its annual Convocation held in Shea Center as members of the University's Board of Trustees, faculty, administrators, and staff, clothed in colorful robes, looked on. Edward B. Weil, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, welcomed the students. “With this ceremony, we formally welcome you to academic life,” he said. “The symbols of this ceremony, the mace and the banners, are a means of welcoming new students to campus, and to challenge you to make the most of the University experience.”
President Arnold Speert also addressed the students. He urged them to look to the faculty for inspiration. “The faculty are here to teach you,” he said. “Seek out those who inspire you, because I believe that this is the most important community you will belong to. I wish each of you great and rewarding success.”
