In a traditional ceremony that harkens back to medieval times, the University formally welcomed approximately 1,200 first-year students to academic life on Wednesday, September 10 during its annual Convocation held in Shea Center as members of the University's Board of Trustees, faculty, administrators, and staff, clothed in colorful robes, looked on.

The ceremony was simulcast into the University Commons Ballroom to reach the overflow audience, and the William Paterson University Faculty Brass Quintet provided the music.

Edward B. Weil, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, welcomed the students. “With this ceremony, we formally welcome you to academic life,” he said. “The symbols of this ceremony, the mace and the banners, are a means of welcoming new students to campus, and to challenge you to make the most of the University experience.”

President Arnold Speert also addressed the students. He urged them to look to the faculty for inspiration. “The faculty are here to teach you,” he said. “Seek out those who inspire you, because I believe that this is the most important community you will belong to. I wish each of you great and rewarding success.”

In the keynote address, Krista O'Donnell, associate professor of history, reminded the students that an education is more than just grades. “Don't focus on just grades,” she said. “General studies are what's best today. Be open to new ideas, strive to do your best, work at solving new problems, and start by believing you can do it.”

Travis Robinson, president of the Student Government Association, encouraged the members of the Class of 2012 to “get involved in all aspects of student life, and make lasting
connections with as many people as you can. We look to you for leadership on campus,” he said. “You are the future that will keep our work going.”
