William Paterson University Celebrates African Heritage in February

Comedy, music, and theater will support the theme of “You Can Steal the Root but not the Fruit,” William Paterson University’s annual African Heritage celebration in February. Most events are free and open to the public.

University Launches New Web Site for Cultural Events

The University has launched a new Web site, www.wplive.org, to promote the University’s vast array of concerts, theatrical productions, comedy shows, gallery exhibits, and lectures. An exciting feature of the new Web site allows patrons to purchase event tickets online directly from the University’s Shea Center Box Office.

Acclaimed Vocalist Jane Monheit Opens Spring Jazz Room Series

Jane Monheit, critically acclaimed vocalist, opens the spring 2009 season of the Jazz Room Series at William Paterson on Sunday, February 8. The series continues with Ron Blake, Brian Lynch, Roni Ben-Hur, a James Williams birthday tribute featuring Mulgrew Miller and friends, and Randy Brecker.



Campus Celebrates Obama Inauguration

A sense of history and an opportunity to bear witness were underlying themes as students, faculty, and staff came together as a community on January 20 to view the inauguration of Barack Obama as the nation’s 44th president on a big-screen television in the University Commons Ballroom.

Two New Exhibits on View in Ben Shahn Galleries on February 2

The Blessing of Lazarus

Two new exhibits will be on view in the Ben Shahn Galleries from February 2 through March 6, 2009. “Three Latino Artists/Artistas Latinas: Elia Alba, Rodriguez Calero, Juana Valdes,” curated by Alejandro Anreus, an associate professor of art at William Paterson, is on view in the Court Gallery. “Concurrent,” a touring exhibit featuring four artists who have devoted their careers to abstraction, is on view in the East and South Galleries.

Men's Basketball Looks for Key NJAC Win, Hosts Kean Saturday

The William Paterson men’s basketball team (14-4, 5-3 NJAC) will host Kean (11-9, 4-4 NJAC) Saturday, Jan. 31, at 3:00 p.m. in a battle of teams currently tied for second place in their respective New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) divisions.

William Paterson University will celebrate “National Girls and Women in Sports Day” on Saturday, Jan. 31, with a series of free events offered at the Recreation Center on campus, including a free basketball clinic for girls of all ages from 9:45

Swimmers and Divers Enjoy Week Off Before Finishing Dual-Meet Schedule Feb. 3-7

The William Paterson men’s (8-2, 0-2 NJAC) and women’s (10-2, 0-2 NJAC) swimming and diving teams will enjoy a week off from competition, returning to action Tuesday, Feb. 3, at home against Ramapo at 6:00 p.m.


Women's Basketball to Square Off Against No. 21 Kean on Saturday

In a match-up of the current New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) divisional leaders, the William Paterson women’s basketball team (15-5, 7-1 NJAC) will host No. 21 Kean (16-3, 8-0 NJAC) Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1:00 p.m.

Flora Named Pioneer Football Head Coach

After serving in an interim capacity for the last 12 months, Jerry Flora was named the William Paterson University football program’s head coach on Dec. 29. An assistant coach for the Pioneers for six years (2002-07) before assuming the head coaching responsibilities in December 2007, Flora led the Pioneers to a 4-6 overall record during the 2008 campaign.

Guadango Named to Preseason All-America First Team

William Paterson junior outfielder Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) has been named to the 2009 D3Baseball.com Preseason All-America First Team. A member of the 2008 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-America Second Team, ABCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region First Team, ECAC Metro Region All-First Team and New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Division II/III All-State First Team, Guadango has been named to the New Jersey Athletic Conference’s (NJAC) All-First Team each of his two seasons as a Pioneer.
