Nine faculty members were honored for their outstanding achievements in scholarship/creative activity, teaching, and service during the fifth annual Faculty Recognition Luncheon held on May 19 in conjunction with the University’s 186th commencement ceremonies.

The awards, which were presented by President Arnold Speert and Provost Edward Weil, were instituted in 2004 to recognize faculty achievement and contributions as the University celebrates the success of students at their graduation.

Honored in the category of scholarship and creative expression were Yingcong Dai, history; Brad Gooch, English; and Lily Prince, art. In the teaching category, recipients were Claire Leonard, biology; John Peterman, philosophy; and Carole Sheffield, political science. Receiving awards for service were Diane Falk-Romaine, music; Jane Hutchison, library; and Cyril Ku, computer science.

“It has become an annual tradition to recognize the accomplishments of our faculty on the same day we gather for our undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies,” says Edward Weil, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “Each year we honor nine faculty members who demonstrate excellence in the primary areas of academic pursuit. Those receiving awards this year have contributed to the advancement of their disciplines through publications, and exhibitions inspired students by their dedication to the life of the classroom, and provided extraordinary service to the campus or community.”

Each honoree received a plaque, a citation, and a $500 award for professional development activities such as research assistance, conference attendance, training and travel.
