JAZZ ROOM FINALE TO FEATURE SAXOPHONIST DON BRADEN AND HIS QUARTET

Saxophonist Don Braden, who drummer Roy Haynes called "one of the new young lions of the tenor saxophone," brings his quartet to William Paterson University in Wayne on Sunday, March 7 for the final concert of the university's winter Jazz Room Series.

The concert will be held at 4 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne. Tickets are available in advance or on the day of the performance at $9 standard; $6 for senior citizens, non-William Paterson students and William Paterson faculty, staff and alumni. William Paterson students may attend free of charge.

Hailed as "brilliant and assured" by Peter Watrous of The New York Times, Braden spent years as the saxophonist with greats like Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard and Roy Haynes.

Braden is the music director for Bill Cosby's current CBS television show and leads his own bands. He is also one of the newest members of William Paterson's jazz studies adjunct faculty.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1963 and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Braden entered Harvard University in 1981 and became well known in the Boston jazz scene. In 1984, he moved to New York City where his first gigs were with the Harper Brothers Quintet and with Lonnie Smith, and then with Betty Carter. He toured with the Wynton Marsalis Quintet for more than seven months, after which he recorded with Carter on her Grammy Award-winning album "Look What I got."

Braden was a member of the Freddie Hubbard Quintet from 1989 to 1991. Since then, he has worked with Kenny Barron, the Mingus Big Band, Tom Harrell, J. J. Johnson and others as well as his own groups. He has recorded prolifically, including seven albums as leader. His most recent CD is "The Voice of the Saxophone" on RCA Victor.

Braden and his quartet will be the guests for "Sittin' In," an informal, hosted discussion with the artists followed by a question-and-answer session. The talk begins at 3 p.m. in room 101 of Shea Center. Admission is free to all Jazz Room ticketholders.

Launched in the spring of 1978, William Paterson's Jazz Room Series has earned a reputation for presenting concerts by eminent musicians in the jazz world. The series has been awarded numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and recently won a Citation of Excellence from the Council for its cultural contribution to the state.
