INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED SCHOLAR ON THE HOLOCAUST AND JEWISH STUDIES TO SPEAK AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY --Dr. Deborah Lipstadt, who recently
prevailed against Holocaust denier David Irving in a landmark
lawsuit in the British courts, will discuss Holocaust denial
on November 9 Dr. Deborah Lipstadt, a nationally recognized scholar of the Holocaust and modern Jewish studies, will speak at William Paterson University in Wayne on Thursday, November 9, 2000. Her address, "Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory," is sponsored by the University's Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Her presentation begins at 7 p.m. in Science Hall 200B on campus. Admission is free. Lipstadt recently prevailed in a libel trial in London against David Irving, who sued her for calling him a Holocaust denier and right-wing extremist. The judge found Irving to be a Holocaust denier, a falsifier of history, a racist, an anti-Semite and a liar. Lipstadt will discuss the trial, as well as the issue of Holocaust denial on college campuses. The Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies at Emory University in Atlanta, Lipstadt is the author of "Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory" (Free Press/MacMillan, 1993), the first full-length study of those who attempt to deny the Holocaust. Her 1986 book, "Beyond Belief: The American Press and the Coming of the Holocaust," examined how the American press covered the news of the persecution of European Jews between 1933 and 1945. Lipstadt was an historical consultant to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and in 1994 was appointed by President Clinton to serve on the Holocaust Memorial Council. She has been called upon by members of the U.S. Congress to consult on political responses to Holocaust denial. In 1996 she was appointed to the newly formed Advisory Committee on Religious Freedom Abroad and serves with leaders and scholars to advise the Secretary of State on matters of religious persecution abroad. A graduate of City College of New York, Lipstadt received her master's and doctoral degrees from Brandeis University. She has lectured at universities throughout the United States, England, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Israel. Lipstadt's address at William Paterson University is sponsored in part by the State of New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education, the Beitler Family Fund, and the William Paterson Center for Continuing Education and Distance Learning.
