ROBERT POLLOCK IS GUEST FOR "COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE DAY"
Pollock will participate in the day of events devoted to his music, beginning with an open rehearsal from 10 a.m. to noon. The concert, featuring the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble, begins at 12:30 p.m., and will be followed by a panel discussion. Admission is $3. Highlights of the program include "Metaphor for Vibraphone," a 1998 piece that has a slow and stately beginning and sets the stage for a series of more rapid episodes based on the opening. "Chamber Setting No. 2" (1980) features a narration of Ezra Pound's "Canto" during the second and longest of three movements. Other Pollock works include "Sit Down, Stand Up" (1997) and "Chamber Symphony," a 1994 piece dedicated to the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble and its founder, Raymond Des Roches. The group has performed this piece in many important venues around the globe, leading one foreign newspaper to call the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble the "best in the world." A former student of Milton Babbitt and Roger Sessions, Pollock has published over 70 compositions with three publishers. Pollock's many credits as a composer include the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1973, McDowell Colony Fellowships in 1972 and 1976, and the Ingram Merrill Foundation Award in 1986. His works have been performed in the United States, Ireland, France, Holland and South Korea. Currently, he is composing a solo cello work for Russian cellist Vladimir Tonkha and percussion music for the New Jersey Percussion Ensemble as well as a multimedia chamber setting based on Tarot. Pollock holds a B.A. in music from Swarthmore College, and an M.F.A. in musical composition from Princeton University. The event is co-sponsored by the university and the Composers Guild of New Jersey. For additional information, please call the Shea Center Box Office at 973-720-2371. ###
