William Paterson University Holds Events on September 25 in Observance of September 11 Attacks

William Paterson University will hold a memorial service in remembrance of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attack and a Teach-In which will seek to explain the events of that day to faculty and students on September 25 on the campus in Wayne.

An ecumenical memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 25 in recognition of the many victims of the World Trade Center and Washington, D.C. tragedies. The event will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Science Hall 200A. Attendees are asked to bring an American flag. The program consists of music, prayers, readers, and remarks by members of the William Paterson community. Participants will have the opportunity to share the names of loved ones or friends who were affected by these tragedies. The event was coordinated by the Catholic Campus Ministry and Father Louis Scurti.

The Departments of Political Science, Sociology and Women’s Studies are holding a panel discussion on September 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Science Hall 200B. The topic is "The Raids Against New York and Washington and the Home Front at War." The program is co-sponsored by the Political Science Club, and the University’s Center for International Education. The first panel, to be held from 2 to 3:20 p.m., is "The U.S. and Middle Eastern Conflicts: A Players List." Panelists include Maya Chadda, a political science professor who sits on the Council on Foreign Relations; John Livingston, history; His Excellency, A-G. Razan Sarhadi, U.N. Representative of Afghanistan (to be confirmed); Steve Shalom, political science; and John Mason, political science chair. "The Social and Economic Impacts and Intra-Community Conflict," the second panel, will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Panelists include the University’s Distinguished Visiting Professor Robert Chandross, an economist; and professors Carroll Sparkes and Vincent Parrillo, sociology; Mytheli Sreenivas, women’s studies, and Arlene Scala, women's studies chair. Panelists will speak for a maximum of ten minutes each and then the floor will be open to student and faculty questions, statements and comments.
