ART AT LUNCH TO FOCUS ON ARTISTS' BOOKS SINCE 1950 Amy Baker Sandback, exhibit curator, and David Platzker, director, Printed Matter, Inc. in New York City, will give the lecture, part of a continuing series exploring some of the major transformations in the visual arts during the twentieth century. The program will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Ben Shahn Galleries. Admission is $3. Attendees are invited to bring a brown bag lunch to the informal gatherings; coffee and tea are provided. Special parking is available in Lot 6, near the William Paterson Rec Center, where a free shuttle bus provides transportation to Ben Shahn beginning at 11 a.m. What is an artist's book? These works can be understood as "artist installations within the space of a publication," explains Baker Sandback, who curated the exhibition of more than 300 artists' books on display in Ben Shahn's Court Gallery from September 13 through December 3. Made up of loose sheets, eccentric folds, things that pop up, or an assemblage of objects in a box, the contents of artists' books are as diverse as their formats. In this lecture, the speakers discuss how these books reflect the current concerns of artists and suggest aesthetics that propel artistic inventions at the start of the 21st century. A selection of artists' books under $50 will be available for purchase from the nonprofit book center, Printed Matter. Art at Lunch lectures are held on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. and are hosted by gallery docents and members of the William Paterson faculty. The series continues on October 7 with a lecture on "Crafts in the 20th Century." For additional information on the series, please call the Ben Shahn Galleries at 973-720-2654 or Terry Ross, newswriter, 973-720-2205. ###
