ART AT LUNCH SERIES CONTINUES ITS FOCUS ON IMPRESSIONISM

Impressionism, the painting revolution of the 19th century, continues to be the focus of the spring 1999 Art at Lunch series at William Paterson University in Wayne.

The series, which runs from March 18 through April 15, will take a closer look at the various artists who used adaptations of Impressionism in their own works -- August Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, William Merritt Chase, John Singer Sargent, and Childe Hassam.

Lectures will be held on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. in William Paterson's Ben Shahn Galleries and are hosted by gallery docents and members of the William Paterson faculty. Individual lectures are $3 per person; subscriptions are also available. For ticket information, call William Paterson's Shea Center Box Office at 973-720-2371.

The series opens on March 18 with a lecture on Auguste Renoir presented by Alan Lazarus, professor of art. On March 25, Jane Lloyd, professor of art, will discuss artist Berthe Morisot. Jane Haw, curator of the art collection for the Paterson Library, will discuss artist Mary Cassatt on April 1. James Abbott McNeill Whistler is the focus of the lecture on April 8, presented by Pamela Lawton, adjunct professor. On April 15, Charles Magistro, chairperson of the department of art, will speak about artists William Merritt Chase, John Singer Sargent, and Childe Hassam.

Art at Lunch lectures last approximately 45 minutes. Attendees are invited to bring a brown bag lunch to the informal gatherings; coffee and tea are provided. Special parking is available in Lot 6, near the William Paterson Rec Center, where a free shuttle bus provides transportation to Ben Shahn beginning at 11 a.m.

This marks the 13th anniversary of the lunch hour lecture program, which has been dedicated to exploring the various historical art periods, as well as contemporary American and European art movements.

For additional information on the series, please call the Ben Shahn Galleries at 973-720-2654.
