William Paterson University to Hold Mid-Year Commencement on January 21

William Paterson University in Wayne will celebrate its mid-year commencement on Sunday, January 21, 2001 at 1 p.m. in the Rec Center on campus. In the event of snow or severe inclement weather, the ceremony will be held on Monday, January 22 at 7 p.m.

Ira Shor, the University's Visiting Distinguished Scholar for the 2000-2001 academic year, will be the commencement speaker. The ceremony marks the institution's 172nd commencement.

A total of 702 students are scheduled to receive degrees at the event. Bachelor's degrees will be conferred on 616 undergraduates; 86 students will receive master's degrees. All graduates will have completed their degree requirements between August and December, 2000.

President Arnold Speert will address the graduating class along with Michael Calandra of Pompton Lakes, senior class president. Daniel Sugarman, a professor of psychology, senior faculty member in the College of the Humanities and Social Sciences, will lead the academic procession in the role of University marshal. Graduates will be individually recognized by college and major and will proceed to the platform, where the college dean will award the diploma.

Shor, a professor at the City University of New York Graduate School since 1992, is an expert in critical literacy, education and politics, and pedagogy and education. He is the author of numerous articles and books, including "When Students Have Power; Empowering Education" (1996), "A Pedagogy for Liberation" (1987), and "Freire for the Classroom" (1987). He holds a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Michigan and master's and doctoral degrees in English from the University of Wisconsin. He has been a professor at the College of Staten Island since 1971, and previously taught at Union Graduate School and the University of Wisconsin.

William Paterson University, one of the nine state colleges and universities in New Jersey, offers 30 undergraduate and 18 graduate programs through five colleges: Arts and Communication, Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health.
