Ashrawi, a human rights activist and an international scholar, has combined an academic career as a professor of English literature at Birzeit University on the West Bank with service to many political organizations that benefit her country. She served as official spokesperson of the Palestinian Delegation in the Middle East Peace Process and gained international acclaim during the 1991 peace talks in Madrid for her eloquent championing of the Palestinian cause. Most recently, she resigned in protest from Yasir Arafat's government over a lack of commitment to reforms and alleged corruption. Wing grew up in Orange and attended the Newark Academy Preparatory School. A graduate of Princeton, she received a law degree from Stanford University. She spent five years as a lawyer in New York City specializing in international corporate and litigation issues concerning Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, and was recruited as an independent consultant by the United States Agency of International Development to assist in drafting the constitution of Palestine in 1996. Her experience in Palestine dates back to 1982 when she served as a medical volunteer in the refugee camps in West Beirut. Since then she has been active in Palestinian affairs and received the Union of Palestinian Women Committees Award and is a former board member of the Palestine Human Rights Campaign. William Paterson's Distinguished Lecturer Series is presented by the William Paterson University Foundation, the Student Government Association and the Student Activities Programming Board.
