GEORGE EISEN NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY

Dr. George Eisen, who has extensive experience in the design and management of international programs in the United States and abroad, has been appointed the first executive director of the Center for International Education at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey.

Charged with developing a coordinated international agenda for William Paterson, Eisen oversees a wide range of activities, including student and faculty exchanges, international linkages with institutions throughout the world, international training and development activities, community outreach programs and cultural events.

Eisen comes to the University from Central Connecticut State University, where he served as director of the George R. Muirhead Center for International Education from 1998 to 2000. Previously, he held a number of appointments at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California, including director of the Institute for Regional and International Studies from 1993 to 1998, and coordinator of graduate studies, 1983 to 1989.

An expert in ethnic and race relations, specifically anti-Semitism and sport, Eisen is the author or editor of five books, including "Children and Play in the Holocaust" and "Ethnicity and Sport in North American History and Culture." He also has written more than 50 articles, book chapters and numerous book reviews in scholarly journals.

Eisen's many honors include honorary fellow of the European Committee for Sport History, and the Zvi Nishri Award for Outstanding Scholarly Contribution to Sport. In 1993, he served as a Fulbright Scholar in Estonia, where he was instrumental in the establishment of the Baltic Center for North American Studies at the University of Tartu.

A native of Hungary, Eisen is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a bachelor's degree in kineseology and a master's degree in history and anthropology. He holds a doctoral degree in history from the University of Maryland, College Park, and social psychology from Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary.

William Paterson University, one of the nine state colleges and universities in New Jersey, offers 30 undergraduate and 18 graduate programs through five colleges: Arts and Communication, Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health. Located on 370 hilltop acres in Wayne, the University enrolls approximately 10,000 students and provides housing for nearly 2,300 students. The institution's 352 full-time faculty are highly distinguished and diverse scholars and teachers, many of whom are recipients of prestigious awards and grants from the Fulbright Program (24 scholars), the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the American Philosophical Society
